The RAM Power Wagon gets a diesel option for 2027

Are you a hardworking, big-towing guy or gal who also wants to offroad like the rest of ‘em? The 2027 RAM Power Wagon with the 6.7L Cummins Diesel is here! Producing 475 hp and 1075 lb-ft of torque, the rocks will just run awy afraid. For decades Power Wagon fans have been asking for a diesel variant, and RAM is delivering. So why have two of the same truck? Let’s talk about it.

The gasser Power Wagon that’s been around for decades is one of the most offroad capable trucks ever built. There’s no secret why it has a cult following. Since the most recent iteration since 2014, the Power Wagon only came with the 6.4L Hemi gas V8, until now. Nobody accuses the 6.4L Hemi of being lightweight, but it is about 488 pounds lighter than the 6.7L Cummins. That kind of weight difference over the front axle really can dig you into mud or make it hard to crawl over a rock.

The Power Wagon has always been the off-roaders’ truck, but with a max payload of roughly 1570 pounds and a tow rating of 10,530 pounds, it’s definitely decent, but not the most optimal option for heavy duty towing. The diesel Power Wagon attempts to split the difference on that problem, by being quite a bit heavier, but able to do more typical truck things that lead to a payday. Let’s take a look at what you get.

The diesel Power Wagon is the first Power Wagon with an optional fifth wheel prep package, and puts the Hemi Power Wagon’s max towing to shame with a whopping 19,630 pounds! It also maintains the front sway bar disconnect, and front and rear locking differentials. Instead suspension takes it’s inspiration from the Rebel trim level with 3-link in the front and 5-link coil suspension in the rear. RAM’s partnership with Bilstein makes a return with the shocks and springs, and a damper connecting the rear axle to the springs for greater stability. The rear locker also acts as a limited-slip differential when it’s not in use.

However, it’s not all fun and games because you do lose a few features from the gasser. For example, the 12,000 pound WARN winch is no longer a factory option, the Articulink front control arms on the front axle are gone for packaging purposes. Articulink allows the suspension to articulate fully providing for a better contact patch when climbing obstacles. The Cummins truck also has one inch less ground clearance at 13.2 in than its Hemi brother. As far as rubber, the Cummins Power Wagon comes equipped with 8 lug, 20in wheels and 33.5in Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires.

TFL Truck put both trucks head to head, and from their testing it’s clear that the difference in off road capability is something only the most seasoned rock crawlers will notice. However, when you do get to your campsite deep in the mountains, you have 2.4Kw of power in the bed to run your home theater setup!

The interior is a very luxurious place to be - and it better be for a starting price kissing $90,000. You do get some great tech features like a 360 camera, 12in driver instrument cluster screen, camera rearview mirror, 14.5 in center MMI screen, and the new trend of the passenger display. As a truck owner myself, I’d rather have the storage cubby with the little sliding door, but to each their own.

It seems to be the rule in 2026 that trucks don’t come cheap and that holds true with the PW as well. The Cummins engine upgrade is $12,995 leading to a staggering starting price of $89,560! Oh and let’s not forget the $3495 required equipment package.

So if you are a hotshot trucker, work in the gravel business, or go to the dump a lot; and 10,000 pounds of towing isn’t good enough for you, and you have a cool 100k to put up, the Cummins Power Wagon is for you! This is a great addition to the lineup, and as the trucks are on their way to dealers, I’m excited to see how they sell and perform. Hopefully RAM will make a less ritzy version just like the Tradesman Power Wagon.
